Podcast Studio

Born in 2024, our ŌHP Podcast Studio gives Ōpōtiki’s tamariki and rangatahi a safe spot to share their korero tuku iho, spark big conversations, and grow kotahitanga and whanaungatanga together.

Thanks to funding from Te Rau Ora and their Rangatahi-Led Innovation Fund, we were able to purchase some top-notch recording gear from Waikato Sound and Lighting.

We’re capturing the voices and korero of our vibrant community—sharing stories and experiences that inspire, connect, and uplift. This is more than just recordings; it's the heartbeat of our people, echoed and amplified for all to hear.

  • Intro to Podcasting

Our Intro to Podcasting workshops are all about jumping straight into the magic of storytelling with sound.

We kick off by unpacking the gear — microphones, mixers, and headphones — so that rangatahi feel confident with the tools of the trade. From there, we explore what a podcast really is: your own radio show, on demand, where kōrero, ideas, and stories come alive.

Together, we break down different podcast formats and styles, helping rangatahi see the power of their voices. The highlight is always the first recording session — a chance to get behind the mic, test the waters, and create their very first audio snapshots. Along the way, we guide them in speaking clearly, calming the nerves, and using their equipment with confidence.

  • Podcast Creation

Next, we shift into building content. Rangatahi learn how to shape conversations by crafting their own pātai for future episodes. We introduce the difference between open-ended questions that spark deep kōrero and closed questions that draw out quick facts or opinions.

Even though creating a full podcast series comes later, these workshops lay down the foundation. By the end, participants are equipped with the confidence and skills to start shaping their own unique podcasting journeys. It’s about nurturing creativity, storytelling, and community connection — one episode at a time.

  • Editing

Once the kōrero is captured, it’s time to polish it up. We take tamariki and rangatahi through the basics of editing with tools like Soundtrap and Podbean, showing them how to cut, shape, and polish their recordings.

This hands-on learning helps them take control of their content, while playful experimentation keeps the process fun. By the end, they’ll know how to edit and upload their own podcasts, finding their unique voice and sharing it with the world. It’s about growing both technical skills and the confidence to be heard in the digital age.

  • Marketing and Branding

The final step is helping rangatahi take their podcasts further — into the world of branding, promotion, and community connection.

We explore how to design a logo, choose colours and symbols that reflect their kaupapa, and build an authentic brand identity. We also show them how to connect with local businesses and potential sponsors, weaving in acknowledgements naturally so that every partnership feels meaningful and grounded in community.

By sharing their podcasts widely, rangatahi can gather feedback, grow their audience, and strengthen their message. This stage goes beyond technical skills — it builds resilience, creativity, and collective pride, ensuring our voices are not just recorded, but heard, valued, and celebrated.
